Pillow Talk Episode 3: Are We Growing Together or Just Growing Older?

One of the greatest misconceptions about marriage is that time automatically produces closeness. While years may increase familiarity, they do not necessarily increase connection. Couples can share the same home, raise the same children, attend the same church, and celebrate the same anniversaries while quietly drifting apart.

The reality is that growing older together is inevitable. Growing together is intentional.

In this episode of Pillow Talk, we ask a question that every couple should revisit regularly:

Are we growing together or just growing older?

Growth Doesn't Happen by Accident

When most couples first fall in love, growth feels natural. There is excitement, curiosity, and a desire to learn everything about one another. Conversations are frequent. Dreams are shared. Time together is a priority.

Then life happens.

Careers become demanding. Children require attention. Bills need to be paid. Responsibilities multiply. Before long, many couples find themselves functioning more like business partners than life partners.

The danger is not that life gets busy. The danger is becoming so focused on managing life that we stop nurturing our relationship.

Healthy marriages require intentional growth.

Signs You Are Growing Together

Growing together is about more than spending time in the same space. It means your hearts, minds, and spirits continue to develop in unity.

Some signs that couples are growing together include:

  • You still have meaningful conversations.

  • You continue learning new things about each other.

  • You pray together and encourage each other's faith.

  • You discuss goals, dreams, and future plans.

  • You celebrate victories and navigate challenges as a team.

  • You support each other's personal growth.

Growth creates connection because it keeps the relationship alive and evolving.

Signs You May Be Growing Apart

Sometimes distance develops so gradually that neither spouse notices until the gap feels significant.

Warning signs may include:

  • Conversations becoming limited to schedules and responsibilities.

  • A lack of curiosity about each other's thoughts and feelings.

  • Living parallel lives instead of shared lives.

  • Emotional disconnection.

  • Reduced affection and intimacy.

  • Feeling more like roommates than partners.

These signs do not mean a marriage is failing. They are often invitations to become intentional again.

Spiritual Growth Matters

One of the strongest indicators of marital health is spiritual growth.

Amos 3:3 asks:

"Can two walk together, except they be agreed?"

When couples pursue God together, they strengthen the foundation beneath every other area of their relationship.

Praying together, studying Scripture together, attending worship together, and discussing what God is teaching each person creates spiritual intimacy that strengthens emotional intimacy.

The closer each spouse grows to God, the easier it becomes to grow closer to one another.

Questions Every Couple Should Ask

Growth begins with honest conversation.

Consider discussing these questions with your spouse:

  • How have we changed over the last year?

  • What are we doing well as a couple?

  • Where do we need improvement?

  • What dream have we neglected?

  • How can we support each other's growth?

  • What would help us feel more connected?

The goal is not perfection. The goal is awareness.

Growing Together Requires Intention

Strong marriages are not built by chance.

They are built through:

  • Consistent communication

  • Shared experiences

  • Intentional time together

  • Mutual support

  • Prayer

  • Grace

  • Commitment

Every meaningful conversation is an investment in your future.

Every shared dream strengthens your partnership.

Every prayer draws your hearts closer together.

Your Pillow Talk Challenge

Tonight, take a few moments to sit down with your spouse and answer this question honestly:

Are we growing together or just growing older?

Listen carefully to one another's answers.

Celebrate the areas where growth is happening.

Identify one area where you would like to grow together over the next month.

Then pray together and ask God to strengthen your marriage as you continue the journey.

Final Thoughts

A healthy marriage is not measured by the number of years spent together. It is measured by how intentionally two people continue to pursue one another through those years.

Growing older is automatic.

Growing together is a choice.

Choose each other.

Choose connection.

Choose growth.

And most importantly, choose to keep God at the center of it all.

Until next time, keep God first, love intentionally, and remember: healthy marriages are built one conversation at a time.
